How pip value is calculated

The raw pip value is first calculated in the quote currency, then converted into the selected account currency when required.

1

Calculate position units

Units = position amount × contract size

1.00 × 100,000 = 100,000 units

2

Calculate quote pip value

Quote pip value = units × pip size

100,000 × 0.0001 = 10 USD

3

Convert when required

Multiply quote/account or divide account/quote

No conversion when account currency equals quote currency

4

Value the selected move

Total value = pip value × number of pips

$10 × 10 pips = $100

Common Questions

What is one pip?

For most forex pairs one pip is 0.0001. For pairs where JPY is the quote currency, one pip is commonly 0.01.

Why is the raw value in the quote currency?

The pair's price increment is denominated in the quote currency, so units multiplied by pip size produces a quote-currency value first.

Which conversion direction should I use?

Multiply when the rate is quote/account. Divide when the rate is account/quote. The calculator labels both directions using the selected currencies.

Does this include trading costs?

No. Spread, commission, swaps and slippage are separate from the pip-value calculation.
